Gorgeous little record from
young Manchester troubador Twenty Twenty Vision, a.k.a. Adrian
Lomas. The decision to go it alone after stints behind the drum kit
and as a frontman in Twenty Twenty Vision's former incarnation as a
three piece is, on this evidence, a splendid idea.
"Complication" embraces the warmth and melodicism of the Foo
Fighters mellower moments ("Next Year" in particular.) "Some
Silhouette" is a 2-and-a-half minute nugget of Badly Drawn Boy-esque
music box charm, whilst quirky keybboard effects up the charm stakes
on "So Secretly". Adrian sites the aforementioned Mr Gough and
Elliot Smith as two of his influences, and fans of
plaintive-yet-tuneful pop can't fail to be impressed with Lomas' own
contribution to the genre. Granted, these tracks are hardly
dissimilar to those found on "The Hour of Bewilderbeast", but they
contain enough of their own understated allure to appeal. Just
like finding a box of chocolates hidden amongst a cupboard full of
baked beans, this is a really sparkling demo.
8/10, Matt
