This is lo-fi band Sciflyer’s first EP,
and it’s a really cool combination of distortion, white noise,
psychedelia, 60’s / 70’s sci-fi, surf music and pink floyd. Sound’s
interesting? To say yes would be a huge understatement; this is one
of the most exciting CD’s I’ve heard in long while. Burn and Sell
kicks off the CD, full of distorted guitars and swirling noises, the
riff really gets under your skin. This is totally addictive stuff,
maybe the sort of music that Yoda would listen to when chilling out,
away from the Jedi council perhaps. Beyond the Event Horizon
continues the sound further, marrying it with a surf beat sound,
totally psychedelic, it’s hard not to think of the words “groovy”,
“fab” and “swinging” when describing it. The Time is Right Now is
much slower in tempo and features an echoing vocal over the
multitude of noises all kept in time by a steady beat. Come Up To My
Cloud has a fantastic summery guitar riff with another distant
echoing vocal. It sounds as if they were playing on a real high,
making the title very appropriate. As soon as it starts you can feel
yourself knocking up the volume with every beat. On Sovereign, the
melody fits so loosely it almost drifts away and again there’s
plenty of white noise and distortion added to the mix. This ones a
real slow burner, you loose all concept of time while listening to
this CD. The sound is definatly reminiscent of My Bloody Valentine,
with surprises on every track and loads of inaudible vocals, if you
liked Loveless then you would probably love this CD. A Pink Floyd
cover Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun, appropriately
brings an absolutely superb record to an end. I recommend this CD to
anyone looking for something different. It’s hypnotic and absolutely
stoned, a splendid time is guaranteed for
all.
