Single: Flying Machine - Star / Sleeping In
Vapours
Label:
Dream Records
Release Date:
Out Now
You may have heard
the name Flying Machine floating around here and there because
they’ve toured with the likes of Goldrush, Electric Soft Parade and
British Sea Power. However, unlike those bands, they’ve failed to
make any strong impression on the music press. Unlike the bands
they’ve toured with, they aren’t as particularly ‘rockin’. They take
a quieter approach to their sound, which although remains tuneful
and well crafted, the songs don’t really seem to go anywhere, they
just drift. Perhaps the dreamy and drifting sound is what they were
after, the song titles suggest they probably are, but it really
doesn’t work as well as one would hope.
‘Star’ can be
lazily described as a mix of Radiohead and The Flaming Lips. I’m
feeling lazy, so it’s probably best I stick with that summary. I’ll
also add it is rather good, but a tad dull. Following with ‘Sleeping
In Vapours’, which is altogether a much darker sounding song. The
female backing vocals work far better on this song than on the
previous tune ‘Star’. Just try and resist clicking your fingers
along to this…it’s not that hard to actually, but some finger clicks
would have gone down a treat on this track.
I can’t really
complain about Flying Machine, they must be praised for originality
and the fact they are able to string together some words and sounds,
but their sound just really isn’t very exciting. I’m
sorry.
