Single:
Schwab - Little Beats/Got The Greed
Label: Star Harbour
Released: Out Now!
“Bluuuuues explosion!”…Is
what Jon Spencer would shout after giving this track a spin. He wouldn’t be
wrong in his random shouting of ‘blues explosion’ either.
Schwab, who come from the
dark and murky depths of East London claim that they “could be the answer to our
musical troubles”. I doubt this very much; as if that’s the case then a thousand
and one other bands could also claim the very same thing. You see, Schwab seem
to have stolen somebody else’s song, but God dammit, whoever’s song they stole
they’ve done it proud.
Typical toe-tapping blues is
number one on Schwab’s agenda and they pull it off. The opening track ‘Little
Beats’ is a cracking opening track, they aren’t messing around, and they’re
straight in there. The vocalist sounds like he’s unspeakably drunk on a cocktail
of various drugs, he screams out the rock ‘n roll clichés without hesitation
before the song explodes in to a rather splendid mix of Velvet Underground, Jon
Spencer’s Blues Explosion and one for the modern day kids, The White Stripes,
but with far more vigour.
The other track on the
single is ‘Got The Greed’ which takes off nicely from where ‘Little Beats’ left
off, only taking the foot of the accelerator slightly, but not enough to stop
any frenzied dancing you may have burst in to during the previous song.
Rock ‘n roll, blues,
indie-pop and even a hint of dance are contained in this split single. I’m sure
you already have several records in your collection that sound remarkably like
this, but I say ‘fuck it’, have one more.
7/10,
